The Wilson Todd photographs are a rare collection of
exquisitely-printed, vintage photos from the early 20th
century. These images capture the true essence of the
roaring 20's.
Printed on fine art archival paper from the period, by
Wilson Todd, these vintage prints showcase Todd as a master
printer and consummate photographic artist.
The Wilson Todd original
prints have exacting detail with rich, silky blacks,
beautiful mid-tones and bright highlights. In addition to
central photographic images, Wilson Todd's unique artistry
and exceptional technique created prints that include
custom, photographic-printed borders with a textural
quality. The detail in these original images makes these
prints some of the most beautiful, museum-quality original
works of photographic art from the period.
Wilson Todd images feature
subjects in stunning poses using light and expression in a
manner unlike contemporaries of the period. Todd's skills in
mastering the use of light on the human form demonstrate his
ability to see and shape art within the photographic studio
environment. His lighting style, highly advanced for the
period, continues to set a standard for contemporary
photography and studio lighting. Todd's ability to
masterfully pose, light, photograph and print artists from
the early 1900's provides an exceptional artistic and
historical record of the period and timeless art for all
time.
Protected and stored in a
private collection for more than 70 years, recently these
images have been shared in limited venues. In 2000,
B&W Magazine published its millennium issue
featuring Wilson Todd as the photographer to represent the
1920's. In 2002, the St. Louis Art Museum dedicated an
entire gallery to the Wilson Todd
collection.
Wilson Todd himself
photographed many of his contemporaries in art and theatre.
In fact a wood block carving by renowned artist, Werner
Drewes, is a portrait of Wilson Todd. Original studio
registers from the period lists Drewes as a Todd Studios
client with Todd and Drewes trading work in 1926. This is
just one of Todd's many historical clients. Please read
